10 Remakes That Should Never Have Happened

9. Get Carter (2000)

Robocop Remake 2014
Warner Bros.

Often cited as one of the greatest British films of all time, Get Carter stars Michael Caine as Jack Carter, a veteran Geordie gangster armed with a London accent thicker than a foot of bulletproof glass. Never taking issue with the darker side of the criminal underworld, Caine threatens to kill virtually everyone he comes across,.

If this had anybody but Michael Caine in the lead role, it would probably have gone under the radar when The Godfather was released the next year, but he manages to make the simple plot of a glorified revenge flick work. He might have as few lines as Tom Hardy in Mad Max, but Caine delivers them so effectively that he draws attention away from the shoddy acting typical of the 1970s, even when he's standing naked in a Newcastle street with a shotgun.

The American remake released in 2000 stars Sylvester Stallone, and boy is Michael Caine missed in this one. The main issue is the script, which was never particularly good to begin with. Most of the time Michael Caine is asking single-syllable questions and murdering people, but with the man that gave us glorious lines like "You're a Kentucky Fried Idiot" in the lead, it lacks the same intensity and force of character as the original.

Without Caine in the lead, the mostly unchanged plot of the film doesn't age well, and it's a shame to see a classic film butchered like a pig in a slaughterhouse.

They don't let me write here anymore. I think they were put off by my handlebar moustache.
