10 Remakes That Totally Outshone The Original
5. Chicago (2002)
The play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a former reporter for the Chicago Tribune, debuted in 1926. Inspired by a pair of murder cases she had covered, Chicago satirized the media and its sensationalizing of terrible crimes.
It quickly spawned a silent movie adaptation sharing the same title. Another version entitled Roxie Hart starring Ginger Rogers in the title role was released in 1942.
A new vision of the story hit the public in 1975 with a musical stage version. It was this version that director Rob Marshall adapted into the 2002 film. Featuring a cast including Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah and John C. Reilly, 2002's Chicago is one of the most successful movie musicals of all-time.
To go along with claiming more than $300 million at the box office and cleaning up at the Golden Globes, it won six Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zeta-Jones.
