8. Little Shop of Horrors

Though the films might be inherently difficult to compare, it is fair to say that the 1960 original is far from a bad film, and above all else we should be grateful that it introduced us to Jack Nicholson. Still, the two films are very different; the original film inspired the 1982 Broadway smash-hit musical, which in turn inspired this 1986 film, starring Rick Moranis. Director Frank Oz fashions one of his most purely entertaining films, the best moments of which usually occur when he focuses on the flesh-eating plant, Audrey II. There are also a number of wonderfully demented cameos, specifically Steve Martin as a sadistic dentist, and Bill Murray bizarrely enough as his aptly masochistic patient. It's scenes like this, conceding the film's batty, dark humour, that make it a quirky classic of the genre and superior to the nevertheless enjoyable original film.
