10 Remarkable Movie Performances By The Last Actor You'd Expect

6. Ellen Page In Super

21 Jump Street Channing Tatum
IFC Films

Ellen Page made a name for herself playing young quirky characters, most famously as the title character in everyone's favourite hipster movie Juno. When she appeared in James Gunn's massively underrated Super, at first she seemed to be playing another character like that.

The film tells the story of a "The Crimson Bolt" (played by Rainn Wilson), a man who believes that a public-access television character has told him to become a superhero and rescue his wife from drug dealers. Armed with a red costume and a wrench, he sets off on his quest to make crime "shut up". Part way through the film, his best friend Libby (Page) discovers his identity and decides to become his sidekick "Boltie".

At first Libby seems to be a typical Ellen Page character, sweet, quirky and high energy. However, this is all a set-up for the film's best twist. As Boltie, Libby is even more of a depraved vigilante than Frank. Watching the tiny Ellen Page throw herself at criminals provides some of the movie's greatest moments of dark comedy, including her beating up a guy for keying her car and laughing at a hitman after crushing his legs with a car.

Y'know, trying to type out black comedy jokes really makes you sound like a psychopath for enjoying them.
