Technically, Shailene Woodley was not in The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s theatrical release.

She was, however, cast as Mary Jane Watson and can be seen in a deleted scene. With Jennifer Lawrence’s The Hunger Games star power elevating the resurrection of Fox’s X-Men saga, it was no surprise that Sony planned to use Woodley’s Divergent background to help bolster their own universe.

Sadly, as with all other elements of Sony's plans for universe-building via The Amazing Spider-Man, we'll never know what her role as Mary Jane Watson would have looked like and what kind of impact she would have had on Peter Parker post Gwen's death.

If you’ve followed her career after Divergent, you’ll have noticed that Woodley’s far from the angsty teen she was once portrayed. Roles in Adrift and Big Little Lies demonstrate her maturity and range.

A true debut in Sony’s Spider-Verse would be well-deserved, if not overdue.

She's a fantastic candidate to take a featured character in the new Spider-Verse, perhaps in an out-of-left-field role like May Parker from an alternate universe.
