10 Ridiculous Film Stories Everyone Believed (But Were Actually April Fool's)

7. James Cameron Is Directing Prometheus Sequel

Here's a great confluence of circumstances that created the perfect April Fool's storm. Worst Previews doled out this classic prank, taking full advantage of the fact that most people reading stories don't tend to look at all the facts or check for sources; the article even linked back to the Prometheus forum, but the few viewers who actually checked the link wound up being redirected to an April Fool's picture. Not only did the site's commenters take it to be true, but even sites as reputable as The Guardian picked it up, as did Deadline, neither correctly attributing the source of the news (because, of course, there wasn't one). "Proper" news sources such as this picking it up gave the story the validity to spread like wild-fire, and perhaps not wanting to be seen as unprofessional, Deadline outright refused to admit their incompetence; they changed their story to say that Cameron made the comments behind closed doors and "in jest". It's a perfect cocktail for success; a story most people could and even want to believe, such that not even reputed outlets bothered to check up on the facts and just helped propogate it.
