10 Ridiculous Horror Movie Villains That Shouldn’t Have Worked… But Did
5. The Banana Splits - The Banana Splits Movie (2019)
For anyone who grew up between the late ‘60s and early ‘80s, The Banana Splits was a wacky Hanna-Barbera variety show featuring the titular group of colourful characters, who are Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snork. However, modern audiences are now more familiar with this gang of goofballs as killer animatronics, and that’s all because of 2019’s The Banana Splits Movie.
Directed by Danishka Esterhazy (who’d go on to make the surprisingly good Slumber Party Massacre remake), this utterly bananas, low-budget romp sees the eponymous robots go on a gruesome killing spree when they find out that their show has been cancelled, holding the studio audience and production crew as captives for their twisted new version of the show.
With its gloriously absurd premise and small budget, this film should have been a disaster. The quartet of anthropomorphic critters are the furthest thing from scary and the central concept sounded too ludicrous for anyone to take seriously. But against all odds, The Banana Splits Movie became a cult sensation.
By taking its cartoonish comedy just serious enough to give the silliness some bite, and throwing in plenty of gore along the way, this foursome was frighteningly funny.
