Kylo Ren goes to murder his mother, but after hesitation decides against it. That decision is reversed when two of his allies shoot and the cockpit is thrown into the nothingness of space; princess Leia included. Han had already died in Episode 7 and Carrie Fisher had passed away, so her end being shown wasn’t much of a surprise. Her using the force to survive the harshness of the elements and fly back to the ship was a surprise, though.

The scene was divisive. Many fans hated the addition and felt it introduced Leia’s force-wielding in an unearned moment. The director, Rian Johnson, came to the scene’s defense. He reminded how Luke uttered the line, “You have this power too” to Leia in The Return of the Jedi, so it was always there. He claimed, “it’s an instinctual survival thing…It’s basically just her not being done with the fight yet.”

Carrie Fisher had passed so seeing her miraculously coming back to life was surely an emotional image. Also, what better way to introduce Leia’s force powers? Johnson admitted he knew it’d be polarizing, “I’m sure it will land different ways for different people, but for me it felt like a really emotionally satisfying thing to see.” The scene was risky, and with risks come those who don’t appreciate them.

If you talk in a theatre I'm in, be prepared to get some pretty passive aggressive stares.
