10 Ridiculous Movie Plots That Sound Like Fan Fiction (But Are Real)

1. Men In Black 3

Introducing time travel, forward or backward, is a good sign of potential fan fiction territory emerging in a franchise. It’s the case for a lot of entries on this list, and Men In Black 3 is one of the most guilty.

To make up for the fact that Tommy Lee Jones was getting too old for the films, studio execs decided to go to the past. A young Agent K would play well with Will Smith as Agent J, or so they thought. It turns out the whole reverse role thing being played out twice in a row doesn’t turn out well a second time. On top of that, the villain comes out of left field, which is a total fan fiction mistake to make.

By the time this movie came out, the Men In Black franchise was becoming a forgotten memory. Sadly, Men in Black 3 did nothing to disprove that theory. The whole meeting with J’s father and dynamic with young K felt like a weird fan fiction trying to riff off Men in Black 2. No one likes a third sequel that fails to bring an exciting concept to the table. Which is why this film was dead on arrival. It's what the film gets for it's fan fiction premise.
