10 Most Ridiculous Rom-Com Premises In Cinema History
2. 50 First Dates Severe Neurological Trauma Made Worse By Adam Sandler
50 First Dates revolves around a man, Henry Roth (Adam Sandler), a player who has no designs on settling down until he meets Lucy (Drew Barrymore), and the two hit it off. The next day however, he finds out she has Goldfield Syndrome, a form of amnesia which means that she cannot retain information beyond hitting her head a year prior on her father's birthday, and so thinks it's that very day every time she wakes up in the morning. To spare the agony of having to explain to her what's happened every day, her family just go along with it, and Henry finds himself irresistibly drawn into her life. The only thing more ridiculous than the premise is how it ends. Lucy wakes up every day and has to watch a tape called "Good morning Lucy", which reveals the nature of her condition and the fact that she is in fact now married to Henry. We then see that they also have a daughter, making everyone in the audience wonder quite what Lucy's reaction must have been when she woke up 8 months, 3 weeks pregnant. Despite requiring possibly a higher level of disbelief than any other film on the list, it just about works because of the sweet tone and Sandler and Barrymore's chemistry. In lesser hands, it could've been horrifically disturbing.
