4. Groundhog Day €“ Bill Murray As A Time-Travelling God

One of the best romantic comedies ever made, Groundhog Day forms a totally OTT premise and then just runs with it. Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a self-centered, douchey TV weatherman who finds himself caught in a time loop, repeating the same day seemingly forever more while retaining his memory each time. He ultimately attempts to use this to his advantage to woo his co-worker, news producer Rita (Andie MacDowell), though finds himself constantly failing, until he realises that short-cuts aren't going to win her over. It's totally absurd in that it has zero plausibility on this physical plane, but it's such a brilliantly original concept that it doesn't matter. It has a great fantasy appeal for the audience, to think of the ways they could take advantage of such a time loop, both romantically and otherwise, and has been an enduring romantic hit for both genders ever since its release.
