10 Ridiculous Stories Behind 2020 Movies
7. Breaking A World Record By 69 Cents - Palm Springs
Ok, this didn't technically happen while filming, but it's too good not to include.
Like many films debuting at Sundance Festival, Andy Samberg and co took their unique take on the wacky wedding rom-com in the hopes of selling distribution rights to the highest bidder. The team were under no illusions. As feel-good and original as Palm Springs was, there was absolutely no way they can dethrone The Birth Of A Nation's $17.5 million purchase right? Right?
Well yeah, they were wrong. Turns out the powers that be at Neon and Hulu made a bid where Neon can distribute it to cinemas (this was in the Great Before), followed by its exclusive release on the Disney-owned streaming platform. And not only were they willing to equal the record but surpassed it by a full 69 cents (Nice).
While nobody knows who exactly was behind the additional charge, you'd think The Lonely Island trio producing Palm Springs had to be involved. And though massive debts were incurred on both sides (the production sold it at a great loss and there was obviously no box office income), it did end up breaking more records when it debuted on Hulu, so not too shabby ultimately.
