10 Ridiculous Times Horror Movie Franchises Jumped The Shark

9. Friday The 13th - Jason Is Raised From The Dead

Bride of Chucky I Love You
Paramount Pictures

Jason Voorhees has a reputation for constantly being "killed" and then coming back in the next movie, but it was mostly plausible for the first half of the franchise. Although he supposedly drowned as a kid, it's ambiguous whether he came back to life or just never died in the first place. He "dies" in Part II and III, but both times the injuries are minor enough that you can maybe accept that they just weren't enough to kill him.

Then in Part IV, Jason is hacked to death over and over. He is very unambiguously dead this time, and the fact that he doesn't appear in Part V confirms it. The writers of Part VI were forced to bring back Jason, though, and how the hell were they supposed to do that? They just threw up their hands and gave up, because in the opening of Part VI, his corpse is hit with a lightning bolt and he comes alive. That's it.

Never is it set up that lightning can bring Jason to life, and it just comes out of nowhere. From this point forwards, Jason is a completely indestructible and clearly supernatural killer, while in the first four movies, he was basically just an unrealistically strong dude. The series definitely still has its highlights after Part VI, but this was the point when it had fully committed to absolute absurdity.
