10 Ridiculous Times Horror Movie Franchises Jumped The Shark

3. V/H/S - The Magical Cape

The first sequel to V/H/S was like a miracle in that it was just as good if not better than the original. The franchise had so much potential to keep getting good from there, but then there was V/H/S: Viral.

The first two V/H/S films usually felt grounded in reality. That might sound weird to say about a series that featured aliens, demons and a succubus, but the found footage format made those things feel like they were existing in our world, not a movie world. It's not like they would introduce anything too unbelievable like actual magic and alternate dimensions.

Well, at least not until V/H/S: Viral, where the very first segment is about a magical cape that feels like something from Are You Afraid of the Dark. Besides just being silly and over the top, the segment also randomly drops the found footage format whenever it feels like it, making the whole thing seem like a movie and not a genuine piece of footage. Wasn't that the whole point of this series?

With a second segment about an alternate dimension where everyone has mutated genitals, it was clear the franchise was no longer interested in existing in any sort of reality. The feeling the first two movies created of discovering weird, possibly genuine supernatural tapes in a basement somewhere had been lost.
