10 Ridiculously Good Decisions Which Saved Your Favourite Movies
9. Ghostbusters - Rewriting It As A Comedy
A classic sci-fi comedy about paranormal investigators, Ghostbusters is an iconic story of plucky American entrepreneurs making their way in a disbelieving world. Naturally it took years of careful planning and writing to execute, except it actually didn't. The film we know and love was a rewrite done in 3 weeks, and was still being finalised as shooting began.
Dan Aykroyd's original vision was a team of intergalactic Ghostbusters, the tone was far more serious, and it was intended to be scary. It was his love letter to the world of paranormal phenomenon his family held so dear to their beliefs. Director Ivan Reitman loved the core concepts but said it was unworkable, a giant marshmallow man appearing in the futuristic space setting was too bizarre to be taken seriously.
Taking the end point of the marshmallow man, he suggested setting it entirely on earth it to allow the more extreme elements to take on a more humorous tone.
They subsequently brought Harold Ramis on board to help rewrite the script, known for his previous comedic work and tasked to write for Bill Murray. Together they created the Ghostbusters we know and love in Dan Akroyd's basement, rewriting the entire script in a few weeks due to their hectic production schedule. It was scarcely recognisable from his original idea, but given the cultural status it is given, without a doubt the better choice.
