10 Ridiculously Overrated Foreign Films

8. Salo: or the 120 Days of Sodom

Another entry that's overrated through its sheer brutality, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom is Pier Paolo Pasolini's adaptation of the Marquis de Sade's massively controversial book. It's another case of a film's reputation being curiously overstated, fans dubbing it as a terrifying masterpiece of orgiastic murder and defilement, as four wealthy fascists subject 8 young people to all manner of torture, before exploding in a violent, disturbing climax. Still, while the film has a thinly-veiled political point, Pasolini doesn't get away that easy; Salo is really just tantamount to what we could now term "torture porn"; it's exploitation taken to the nth degree, with the kidnapped kids having to eat feces and perform lewd sexual acts upon one another. By the end, it is simply too silly and over the top; we become numbed to what is going on, and it ceases to be shocking as a result.
