10 Ridiculously Overrated Foreign Films

7. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon does, admittedly, have some meritorious aspects; it's visually stunning, and there's a graceful cadence to the action scenes that is quite enjoyable, largely thanks to director Ang Lee's ever-stately directorial efforts. However, when it gets to the drama, this is one tiresome slog of a film, so keenly invested in its own self-seriousness that it's never really as much fun as one might think from the trailer and poster. Lee is a dramatist first and foremost, thus those pulled in by the promise of lots of fighting will be disappointed that the film, in fact, indulges in a lot of verbose dialogues before getting to them, leaving the viewer in something of an exhausted state before the busy work even kicks off. This and Lee's later effort to tackle action, Hulk, suggest that the director should stick to what he does best; regal dramas that inspire our minds, and not have pretences to something he's clearly well out of his league going near.
