Pointless Because: While I can understand Thor's producers wanting to "sex-up" a franchise whose chief scientific presence is otherwise played by Stellan Skarsgard (though that Nymphomaniac poster certainly displayed him in a new light), Natalie Portman's Jane Foster is really not much more than a half-baked love interest for Thor, all the more so when you consider how much more appealing his fellow Asgardian, Sif (the lovely Jaimie Alexander), is in every single way. The transparent love story of the first film is fleshed out slightly more for The Dark World, but it's still hard to give a damn about such a bland and uninteresting character despite having a wealth of comic lore to draw from. How To Fix It: Commit fully to the romance between Thor and Jane, or better yet (because I'd rather them not clog up the screen time with this mushy nonsense), actually give her some agency and maybe even her own action scene or two. Portman's work on Black Swan demonstrated she has the nimble physicality required for action, so best put her to work!
