If you want to test the effectiveness of an action filmmaker's abilities, just take away their budget and see how they handle a small scale thriller.

Before he ever got to helm the likes of Desperado, Grindhouse director Robert Rodriguez famously cut his teeth with the no budget revenge thriller El Mariachi, and well before Spider-man helmer Sam Raimi took on the web-slinging wonder, he was cobbling together a modest sum to make the scrappy calling card The Evil Dead.

Even late in his storied career, The Last Boy Scout director Tony Scott’s tense, self-contained 2009 remake of the sparse seventies thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three proves he was always the greatest action helmer of our time.

Gone are the huge scale explosions and mile high chases of Top Gun and Deja Vu, and in their place is a fast-paced, unbelievably effective slice of action cinema made all the better by its small scope. RIP to a great.
