7. Old Fashioned Was A Kinkless Fifty Shades Clone

When the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy became an unexpected phenomenon in the world of publishing, smashing all sorts of records for erotic romance sales, we all knew a glossy big budget adaptation of EL James’ critically reviled hit was on the way.

The film took a torturous path to the silver screen, plagued by talent bailing on the sinking ship both in front of and behind the camera. Numerous high-profile writers, actors, and directors dropped out of attempts to adapt the story, afraid to be embarrassed by the eventual result of their toils (and by the reportedly obsessive control wielded by series scribe E.L James).

Meanwhile, another film in production attempted to capitalise off the poor publicity and moral panic surrounding the controversial trilogy. Old Fashioned was a squeaky clean, chaste Christian romance whose publicity centred around the fact that it was a morally upright alternative to Fifty Shades.

The arguably abusive relationship dynamic? The glamorization of dysfunction? The lazy writing and sleepwalking performances? Oh, they’re all still there, it’s just the kinky sex that this Christian romance opted to cut out of its Fifty Shades rip off.

Because no one came to Anna and Christian’s story for the sex, right?
