6. Dolly Dearest Wasn't As Scary As Child's Play
Quick, a game of free association - When you hear the title Child’s Play, what do you think of?
If your answer was “Chucky”, then congratulations, you’ve got the most memorable aspect of Don Mancini’s horror franchise embedded somewhere in the back of that movie buff mind.
Whether it’s Brad Dourif’s iconic original or Mark Hammil’s, er, admirable attempt in 2019’s reboot, Chucky is the glue holding together the wildly varying tones and quality levels of the Child’s Play franchise.
So, what did the creators of 1991’s Dolly Dearest opt for when it came time to helm a horror?
Why, try to rip off Mancini’s terrifying creation with… a withered Raggedy Anne, complete with raspy smoker’s voice. Sounding like Kathleen Turner on a bad day and looking like her face shrank in the wash, this Chucky knock off had all the scare factor of a real-life counterfeit toy and about as much appeal for audiences.
Much as it may shock you to hear it, the doll didn’t make another appearance onscreen after the film’s lacklustre performance upon its debut.
