10 Romantic Film Relationships That Definitely Wouldn't Last
5. Kate And Leopold
On the surface, this seems perfect. Leopold is a gorgeous, courteous (not to mention rich and intelligent) man who pretty much worships the ground that Kate walks on. What's not to love? It makes perfect sense that Kate would follow him back to the 1800s, where she can live a life of privilege as the Duchess of Albany and be with the man she loves. But then you think about what she's really just committed to. This is 1876. How is Kate, a driven career woman, going to react when she fully grasps the implications of the fact that women will not be allowed to vote in New York for another 41 years? To say nothing of the logistical issues of living in a less advanced society after you have, you know, sort of gotten used to antiseptics, cars, and pasteurised milk. Imagine the horror of the realisation that you will never have a hot shower or Starbucks ever again. Inevitably, Kate will grow to resent Leo, for having to give up everything she has ever known to be with him, and their relationship will disintegrate. You really put all your eggs in one basket, didn't you, Kate?
