10 'Rotten' Films That Will Eventually Be Viewed As Classics

5. Only God Forgives

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 40% Why It'll Be Re-Assessed As A Classic: When critics got their hands on Only God Forgives, the criticisms from those who didn't take to it were repeated across the board: that it was too slow, that the actors were wooden, that it was too much style over substance. What those critics missed - and what those who immediately loved the film got - was that everything was deliberate. As Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to Drive, the knives were always going to be out - maybe the director shouldn't have made something so difficult to digest in that case, but the fact is that Only God Forgives is a slow-burn with very specific aims. The film is designed in such a way that it resembles a dream or, more accurately, a nightmare. In that sense, Only God Forgives is a chilling, powerful success. The objections to Only God Forgives were similar to those levelled at some of the more obscure movies by David Lynch, the director who so obviously inspired the film. As the similarly difficult likes of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and Lost Highway have been re-evaluated over time, taking them from duds to classics, so it will be with Only God Forgives.
