10 'Rotten' Films That Will Eventually Be Viewed As Classics

6. To The Wonder

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 45% Why It'll Be Re-Assessed As A Classic: Every Terrence Malick film since The Thin Red Line has been divisive upon release. What some see as visual poetry, others view as pretentious nonsense. The Tree Of Life was both booed and cheered at its Cannes premiere - now it's widely regarded as a masterpiece. So it will be for To The Wonder, a Malick movie derided more than most simply because, being released so soon after The Tree Of Life, critics seemed to be less open to yet another near-dialogue free film about love and nature. For those who love Malick, however, To The Wonder is just another in a line of flawless dramas. It's basically everything that's great about Malick distilled down to the essentials - To The Wonder is almost a silent movie, told primarily via cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki's gorgeous visual collage and a game cast (including Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko) entangled in a distressed romance. The more experimental nature of the film could be another reason why it proved so off-putting for some on the first go-around, but anyone revisiting To The Wonder will see it's classic Malick simply doing his thing.

Lover of film, writer of words, pretentious beyond belief. Thinks Scorsese and Kubrick are the kings of cinema, but PT Anderson and David Fincher are the dashing young princes. Follow Brogan on twitter if you can take shameless self-promotion: @BroganMorris1
