9. Cherry (37%)
In the months leading up to the release of the Russo brothers' Cherry, the biographical crime drama had courted considerable awards buzz, particularly for Tom Holland's central performance based on PTSD-afflicted Army veteran-turned-bank robber Nico Walker.
Given the Russos' enormous success in the superhero movie arena, their transition into prestige drama fare seemed like a slam dunk, and few expected anything less than broadly positive reviews.
Yet Cherry released to predominantly negative notices from critics, landing a thoroughly mediocre 37%, with most reviewers praising Holland and Ciara Bravo's performances but harshly criticising the screenplay and the Russos' direction.
Between its cliched crime thriller story, navel-gazingly self-aware presentation, and the fact that the Russos pulled out every ostentatious stylistic trick in the book, Cherry was a massively over-confident exercise in excess that lacked the basic character-driven goods to back it up.
For a film many genuinely expected to be a late awards contender earlier this year, this was quite the spectacular fall from grace.
