10 Rushed Movie Deaths That Had No Emotional Impact
9. The Entire Cast - Rogue One A Star Wars Story
This will likely be a controversial one, and sadly not the only installment from the Star Wars franchise on this list.
Rogue One has seemed to be the rare Disney Star Wars release to receive mostly universal praise, with general audiences and extremely online Star Wars fans both being enthusiastic about the way it turned out. However, it wasn't for everyone, including this writer, and a big reason for that is the lack of investment it truly creates in its characters.
It feels like each member of the key cast, from the crew themselves, to crucial supporting performances and even the villains are being wasted, their characters feeling more like plot devices and cogs in a narrative machine rather than individuals with feelings and dimension. The subplots trying to embed these beings who are designed to die with emotional weight largely fail, since the writing isn't prioritising it as fundamental to the film's success. There's no real moments of these people bonding and growing together and, simply, there's no reason to care besides familiarity when they all die.
The only performer who truly manages to get the most out of the climatic sequence where our entire group of protagonists are wiped out is the master Donnie Yen, who uses his physicality and emotional range to get you invested in the moment itself. However, imagining how it could have played with the writing backing up his commitment is haunting.
While it's not a universal failure, it strikes as a missed opportunity to truly make you care for these people, even if their fates were a certainty.
