10 Russian Horror Movies You Need To See
1. Sputnik (2020)
Sputnik was a 2020 sci-fi horror film that focused on the sole survivor of a mysterious spaceship incident as it became clear he did not return to Earth the same way he left. Instead, an extraterrestrial parasite called his body home until it was ready to explore the outside world... unless stopped in time.
While the film was initially a hit, its chances of greater success were cut short due to the pandemic. Sputnik was ultimately released to the home-video market after its Russian release, where it not only received mostly praise from critics but also appeared to be a big hit with horror fans.
Surpassing one million streams, Sputnik became the most-streamed movie across platforms such as More.tv, Wink, and Ivi.ru. Outside of the aforementioned streaming networks, Sputnik was also the fifth most-rented film on Apple TV during its release and made a little outside cash ($11K) at select theatres.
Recent events might have limited your chances of watching Sputnik in theaters, but it's readily available today and definitely worth the watch. Rather than rehash tired ideas from other space-based horror and thriller flicks, Sputnik did its best to maintain a sense of originality. And when it failed at that, the film more than made up for it in the form of intense (and frequently creepy) visuals.
