10 Russian Horror Movies You Need To See

2. Rusalka: Ozero Myortvykh (2018)

A more recent Russian film worthy of being on any horror lover's to-watch list is Mermaid: The Lake of the Dead (originally titled in Russian: Rusalka: Ozero Myortvykh).

Considering the dark nature of the movie, Mermaid: The Lake of the Dead had nothing to do with cute, amorous creatures. Instead, it followed the Slavic mythology, in which drowned unmarried women became mermaids.

In this case, a young man started spending time with an enigmatic woman he met along a lakeshore. His bride-to-be didn't realize he was being swooned by the mystical woman (who turned out to be a wicked mermaid) until it was nearly too late.

Although the man was occasionally saved by his fiancée, the rescues became increasingly difficult, as mermaids were said to keep coming back until they finally left with the man, inevitably carrying him off into the watery depths. Between the ominous folk tale taking thrilling turns at nearly every opportunity and the numerous special effects offering pop-out after pop-out scare, there was enough to keep moviegoers hooked on the film, even if with one eye peeled.
