Humans die all of the time in film, some have even deserved it. So when a human bites the proverbial bullet, we don't tend to think twice; but when a dog dies in film we can't help but get emotionally worked-up to the point we'll never forgive the filmmakers for killing off an adorable pooch.

In the world of horror, no canine death is more devastating than that of German Shepherd Sam in I Am Legend.

Based on the novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, the film stars Will Smith as virologist Robert Neville, the last survivor in New York following a viral outbreak that transformed the inhabitants into mutants. Immune to the virus himself, his only companion as he searches for a cure is his loyal, quadruped companion.

However, when the pair are attacked by a pack of infected dogs, Sam is bitten. With a serum Neville derived proving ineffective and knowing Sam only has minutes to live, he holds her and sings Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds' before strangling her when the virus finally takes hold.

Thankfully, we don't see this onscreen. And even though we know it's not Sam anymore, hearing the dog's cries is traumatising nonetheless.
