10 More Most Satisfying Movie Moments of 2013

8. Mike Wins The Scare Games - Monsters University

The backlash against Monsters University has been a bit surprising. Many have written the film off as a blatant cash-grab for Pixar, akin to the infamous misstep that was Cars 2. What they've failed to see is that Monsters University is more than that. It does something that many prequels fail to try; telling new stories about characters we love while building upon their universe in interesting ways. In their young age, Mike and Sully are far different than we've seen before, and the film shows us sides of their characters we didn't know existed. Their journey from classroom rivals to best friends was remarkably enjoyable; filled of course with Pixar's adept sense of humour and heart. The film is more Mike's story than Sully's, and its he who goes through some of the biggest growth throughout the film. When we first meet him, he's a bit of an arrogant prick. But by the end, he's learned to work with his teammates and face his fears. Though we ultimately know that he doesn't fulfil his dream of becoming a Scarer, we can't help but root for him to do so. The most satisfying moment of the film, though it ultimately turns out to be a cheat pulled off by Sully, is Mike's triumph at the Scare Games. He's gone through so much, overcome so many obstacles, and has wanted to be scary more than anyone else. So when he enters that room, creeps upon the sleeping child, and scares the living daylights out of him, it's impossible not to let out a cheer when the scoreboard declares him the victor.
