10 Scandals Disney REALLY Wants You To Forget
7. Its Moana Brownface Costume
Back in 2016, Moana – Disney’s first film to focus on Polynesian culture – was praised for its cultural inclusivity and with a strong female lead to boot in the form of its plucky titular protagonist the movie was hailed by many a critic as Disney’s most progressive to date.
But proving they apparently didn’t learn anything from the Song of the South debacle, Disney then went and messed it all up by releasing a kid’s costume based on the character Maui that featured a brown skin suit adorned with his signature tattoos allowing kids across the planet to wear Polynesian skin for Halloween and other such fancy dress occasions.
Not too surprisingly, this angered many Pacific Islanders who accused the company of cultural appropriation and “brownfacing”.
To be fair Disney did issue an apology and pulled the offending costume from stores but really by that point the damage was already done. When will they ever learn?
