10 Scandals Disney REALLY Wants You To Forget
6. Firing James Gunn From Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
As the man behind some of the most popular movies in recent
years, director James Gunn’s dismissal by Disney from the Guardians of the Galaxy
saga by Disney for off-colour jokes about rape and paedophilia he tweeted
almost a decade ago was bound to ruffle a few feathers.
While Gunn’s tweets were undoubtedly in bad taste and, in Disney’s words, “indefensible and inconsistent” with the values the studio projects (at least outwardly) it’s important to note that back in 2012 prior to the release of GOTG but after his hiring by Disney, Gunn had already apologised for his offensive attempts at humour.
You’d think a massive corporation like Disney with its presumably huge legal team would’ve already known of Gunn’s Twitter posts yet they still saw fit to hire him and got two massively profitable movies out of him. It’s almost as if Disney are suddenly trying to do their bit in the wake of campaigns like #MeToo and #TimesUp and the relatively undeserving Gunn is just collateral damage.
Which is kind of jarring considering that sexual harasser John Lasseter is still on Disney’s payroll whereas Gunn was fired pretty much immediately after his tweets were brought to light again. There’s a huge difference between Gunn’s tweets and Lasseter’s actions but it seems Disney is turning a blind eye to that uncomfortable truth.
