10 Scandals Disney REALLY Wants You To Forget

5. Merida’s Sexy Makeover

That ill-advised Moana brownface costume was by no means Disney’s first merchandise related fail. Back in 2013 as part of Merida from Brave’s official induction into the Disney Princess franchise, Disney released a traditional 2D animated version of Merida that saw the tomboyish teenage heroine appearing slimmer and sexier with make-up and a sparkly, off-the-shoulder dress – a far-cry from the unkempt and carefree Merida we saw in Brave.

As Merida had been praised as a relatively unconventional Disney princess in that she isn’t all about falling in love and marrying a prince, this makeover unsurprisingly sparked outrage with Brave co-director Brenda Chapman – who, funnily enough, was Pixar’s first female director before she was fired midway through production – who called the redesign “atrocious”.

Disney was quick to clarify that this version of Merida would not replace the official CG Merida seen in the film although the sexy Merida did appear on a number of Disney Princess merch including backpacks, t-shirts and magazines.

Mind, for a company that repeatedly creates princess that all too often promote unrealistic body imagery and outdated female roles what should we really expect?
