Firstly, ask yourself when was the last time you saw a clown outside of a horror setting? They’ve almost completely transitioned from the role of children’s entertainer to makeup slathered monsters. Pennywise the Dancing Clown, then, was an early trendsetter.

Adapted from one of Stephen King’s most loved novels, the film is set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine, which harbours a dark secret. Every 27 years, Pennywise torments the local children and feeds on their fear.

The clown is the form most often used to knock the children of Derry off their guard, but Pennywise can shapeshift into whatever his victims fear the most. He frequently gets creative with this, appearing as everything from twisted versions of loved ones to red balloons filled with blood.

Whether Pennywise is played by Tim Curry from the 1990 film or Bill Skarsgard from the two recent movies, they both put in the standout performances needed for such a sinister and enigmatic figure.
