10 Scariest Boogeymen In Films

2. The Babadook (The Babadook)

The Babadook is intensely harrowing, and one of the smartest horror films in recent memory.

Amelia is a widow struggling to raise her son, Sam, after his father died in a car crash. It’s a theme which gets more pronounced as the film works towards its conclusion.

Sam becomes obsessed with a character from one of his books - Mister Babadook - who becomes an imaginary friend to the boy. Things start getting strange shortly afterwards when The Babadook starts making nightly visits to the house.

The monster itself resembles a tall pale man dressed in a black coat and top hat. If that’s not creepy enough, he has the nasty habit of scuttling across ceilings like an enormous bug dressed in its Sunday best.

Once the core theme of the film becomes clear, the film serves up the neat trick of being scarier without the monster.
