Based on a novel of the same name; the Japanese horror film spurred the popularity of J-horror globally and prompted both a Korean and American remake and several sequels.

Sadako (or Samara in the western remake) is a boogeywoman who will kill anyone seven days after they watch a cursed VHS tape. Most memorable are the scene where she appears on the television and crawls out of the screen to claim her victims - and traumatise many viewers.

Sadako is based on a Yurei; a vengeful spirit that haunts a specific place. Sadako appears as a drowned girl in a white nightgown with her face covered by her long black hair.

It’s a simple and creepy design, particularly in the Japanese film where her movements are so alien. The effect was achieved by having the actress walk backwards and then reversing the footage for the final film.
