When this film premiered, rumours circulated of audience members vomiting and passing out due to its graphic nature. Yes, there is blood and gore in this movie, but it is so far from ‘torture porn’ and it wouldn’t be fair to focus on the grisly bits alone.
More of a coming-of-age story than a traditional horror story, student veterinarian Justine is hazed at the beginning of her new life at university. Part of this ritual involves eating some raw meat, which she initially refuses due to her lifelong commitment to being vegetarian. However, after having the unpleasant snack, she finds herself craving meat.
Sexuality and femininity are explored in a twisted tale of cannibalism, the latter being a metaphor for carnal desire that many young women feel they have to suppress. The only relief from the chewable (sorry) tension and, at times, horrendous body horror is pitch black humour – and a very sweet dog.
