10 Scariest Foreign Language Horror Films
6. The Wailing
South Korean
horror has been experiencing something of a renaissance over the last few
years, and 2016’s The Wailing certainly contributed to that.
As if a
story of a suspicious and seemingly unstoppable virus couldn’t be more
pertinent, The Wailing taps into a fear we all have: a place we consider safe
no longer being so, becoming corrupted by something human beings cannot control.
What begins
as a tense, slow burn crime thriller turns into an Exorcist-inspired nightmare
by the film’s second act, with so many interpretations ripe for the taking. The
depiction of South Korean shamanism is both fascinating and refreshing,
providing Western audiences with a more grounded and realistic for the story to
take place in.
It tackles
humanity’s need to know the truth no matter the cost, as well as dealing with
issues of faith. Almost every traditional feature of horror is touched upon
here, from possession to disease, and each is handled with care and deftness to
create damn near perfect horror film. It’s absolutely terrifying too!
