10 Scariest Foreign Language Horror Films

2. Hausu

Raw Movie
Toho Studios

Enough of the depressing metaphors and mournful allegories – how about a technicolour cult classic?

When the main characters are called things like Gorgeous and Fantasy, you’re given some idea of what to expect. As in, expect the unexpected because this film is quite possibly the most bonkers horror movie ever made.

With Sesame Street-style sequences, stop-motion animation, kung fu fights with reanimated wood and a hungry, hungry piano, this movie has it all. As terrifying as it is insane, Hausu is by far the silliest on this list but pulls off such bombastic effects with a gleeful subversion of haunted house tropes. A once dark and eerie mansion explodes with a visual assault of colour and madness, a creepy doll’s porcelain eyes twinkle with green, and giant disembodied heads float about like they’ve got nothing better to do.

Honestly trying to describe this film is near impossible as it’s just so wacky. Do yourself a favour and just watch it!
