It Follows was a sleeper hit in the horror genre.
The movie was able to terrify audiences without the use of gore, jump scares or disturbing imagery. Instead, it used the feat of the unknown or chilling feeling that something or someone is constantly watching you wherever you go.
When the creepy and mysterious 'it' arrives in the main character Jay's house, she runs up to her room screaming as her friend and sister follow, confused as Jay is the only one who can see the mysterious character.
As the three are in Jay's bedroom, the doorknob starts to rattle as if someone is trying their hardest to get inside. When Jay's sister realises it's Dara, their other friend, she opens the door - to which a 7ft man without eyes walks down the hallway right behind her friend standing in the doorway.
The arrival of the tall man causes Jay to jump out her second-floor window and run away. The scare is effective as it plays on the unknown and the unnatural feeling of something waiting and hiding in the darkness.
