10 Scariest Horror Movies Set At Halloween
9. May
Growing up with a
lazy eye and a creepy doll as her only friend, the titular May was bullied by
her peers and consequently grew into a socially awkward, lonely young woman. That
is until she gets corrective surgery on her eye, gains a bit of confidence and
starts socialising more with the people around her. But an ugly duckling fairy
tale this is not, and it soon transpires May isn’t just a quirky wallflower but
a thoroughly disturbed person.
So, when it turns out her new acquaintances are actually sh*tty people May snaps culminating in a rather gruesome and Frankenstein-esque plan to literally make her very own friend that she befittingly executes on Halloween night.
It’s Angela Bettis as the eponymous May that helps elevate Lucky McKee’s solo directorial debut above run-of-the-mill horror fare. At once both sympathetic and psychotic, her performance as the social outcast turned murderess is thoroughly unnerving. This, combined with an unexpected ending that’s as touching as it is creepy, makes May a macabre yet melancholy must-see for Halloween.
