10 Scariest Horror Movies Set At Halloween

8. The Crow

Dark Night Of The Scarecrow

Much of the action in The Crow technically takes place on Devil’s Night – the night before Halloween on which American inner cities are besieged by acts of vandalism – but that’s close enough right?

Set in a dystopian Detroit where it’s always dark and always raining, The Crow tells the tragic tale of rock musician Eric Draven (Bruce Lee’s son Brandon) and his fiancée Shelley who are set to tie the knot on Halloween in true goth couple style but are brutally killed by a gang of nogoodniks the eve before. One year later Eric, resurrected from the dead by a mystical crow, returns to exact revenge on the gang that took he and Shelley’s life.

Gritty, tragic and eerie there’s an unmistakable air of Edgar Allan Poe to the supernaturally gothic fable but transposed to a modern urban hell with the added bonus of the kind of artful violence and gore that only comic book adaptations can get away with (it’s adapted from James O’Barr’s graphic novel of the same name).

But what really amps up The Crow’s creep factor are the sad circumstances surrounding star Brandon Lee’s untimely on-set death after a prop gun misfired – a chilling, life-imitating-art tragedy that haunts every frame of the film.
