10 Scariest Horror Movies Set At Halloween

5. Halloween III: Season Of The Witch

Dark Night Of The Scarecrow
Universal Pictures

Season of the Witch departs notably from the rest of the Halloween franchise in that there’s a distinct lack of Michael Myers which saw the film panned upon release. More recently, however, it’s been reassessed as a quality standalone cult film that revels in Halloween even more than its predecessors.

Instead of Myers, we’re given a villain in the shape of Conal Cochran – a mad Irishman who owns Silver Shamrock Novelties, the manufacturer of a range of hugely popular kids’ Halloween masks.

Assisted by an army of androids, Cochran enacts a dastardly and improbable plan to return the holiday to its Celtic roots involving microchips implanted in his masks, a creepy commercial with an annoyingly catchy jingle broadcast on Halloween night, and a plague of child-eating bugs and snakes designed to culminate in a massive blood sacrifice to the Celtic gods.

Is it batsh*t insane? Absolutely, but it’s all good gory fun and amongst all the preposterous plotlines there’s a rather unsettling meta-commentary on the commercialisation of Halloween along with a growing sense of dread as the fateful evening approaches and millions of kids are about to get ritualistically slaughtered.

Plus, where else do you get elements of sci-fi mixed with good old witchcraft and the opportunity to witness a kid’s head getting feasted on by a swarm of creepy-crawlies? Nowhere, that’s where.
