10 Scariest Horror Movies Set At Halloween

4. Night Of The Demons

In Kevin Tenney’s 1980s gore-fest a rag-tag bunch of teenage character tropes decide to throw a Halloween party at an old abandoned funeral parlour with a murky past that’s rumoured to have been built on a patch of cursed land where they hold a séance in hopes of contacting the dead. What could possibly go wrong?

All kinds of things, obviously, when their supernatural shenanigans unleash demonic forces that possess them and mutate them into zombie-like ghouls who turn on their friends in a murderous frenzy.

Initially panned by many, Night of the Demons has gained a cult following in retrospect and while it’s camp and cheesy in that way only low-budget 80s horrors can be it certainly doesn’t hold back on the carnage and weirdness. There’s tongue dismemberment, eye gouging, impalement and other such gore galore plus a genuinely unsettling scene in which a possessed teen stabs a tube of lipstick into her boob Videodrome-style. Yes, really.

But its most disturbing scene is saved for the end in an off-kilter finale that pays homage to that good old ‘razor blade in the apples’ urban legend that rears its head every Halloween in a brilliantly twisted and gory fashion.
