For as much as The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is a much-loved fantasy story for both children and adults, it's actually quite surprising just how far the tone of these movies leans towards the latter end of that spectrum. The Fellowship Of The Ring in particular features some absolutely terrifying scenes that would have no doubt scared the living daylights out of you as a kid. Hell, come to think about it, just about any sequence involving the wailing Black Riders hot on Frodo's trail alone could have been included in this list. But it's definitely that infamous jump-scare of a semi-possessed Bilbo Baggins that stands out the most over the entire trilogy. Introduced as a lovable buffoon in earlier scenes, Bilbo shows up to comfort Frodo after the latter is wounded in action. However, still partly under the influence of the ring, the once loveable Hobbit shows his true colours in a moment of madness as he attempts to steal it from Frodo, hauntingly summing up the hold the insidious relic can have over the weak-willed in the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1fzzkZdU-8
