Midsommar ends with the twisted cult succeeding their quest, the central character succumbing to their might and a horrific sacrifice offered up in the honour of the unholy. Stripped back to its bare plot points, there's a lot of parallels you might draw to writer/director Ari Aster's previous movie, Hereditary.

The devil, as they say, is in the details though, and Midsommar ends in a less frenetic fashion, leaving more room for the abject suffering to unfold. Where Hereditary leaves you in suspense, wondering exactly what's going on as much as what will happen, Midsommar lays it out for you in the starkest of terms.

The cult have won. The temple will burn. The bodies, living and dead, will burn with it. The fierce flickers of the flames, the ritualistic shrieks from the cult members, Dani's breakdown which melts away into a zen like purity... Midsommar was already white knuckle intense, but it certainly saved the best for last here.

This is a final scene which will stay with audiences for a long time. It wasn't a sudden, shocking thing which gave you a jolt of fear, this was deeply, truly frightening.
