9. Night Of The Living Dead

George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead set the table for the modern zombie movie as we know it, and remains arguably the most haunting entry into the entire genre.

It not as technically finessed as Romero's follow-up Dawn of the Dead, Night has an intoxicating power very much its own, using its stark monochrome visuals to create a skin-crawling hellscape within which our hapless heroes reside.

Easy though it is to sniff at "old" horror movies as lacking the red-blooded terror of modern genre fare, Night is as fantastically effective today as it was in 1968, largely thanks to its believably stripped down, minimalist execution, and the palpable performances of its central cast.

And of course, we can't ignore the film's devastating social commentary - which would become a hallmark of Romero's work thereafter - shining a light on American race relations in one of the country's most pivotal decades.

It's an oldie but a goodie, as they say, and because the distributor failed to place a copyright notice on the original film prints, it also happens to be in the public domain.
