10 Scariest Natural Disaster Movies You Need To See
5. The Wave
In this true story thriller, Norwegian geologist Kristian prepares for home after finishing his instrument readings. But when the sensors indicate all the groundwater in the area has vanished, he believes a natural disaster is imminent.
Although Kristian's suspicions are correct, he could never have anticipated how devastating the cataclysm would prove to be. Before the evacuation alarm can be activated, a rockslide collides into the local fjord, causing untold damage.
Somehow, that's not the worst part. The avalanche causes the slope under the fjord to rip open like a dam, drowning the area below. Now, surviving a tsunami isn't unfeasible, but when the tidal wave in question stands 260ft tall, making it out alive doesn't seem realistic.
The visuals throughout The Wave are jaw-dropping, depicting the toppling buildings and the fatal flood with breathtaking realism - made all the more impressive by a relatively modest $6 million budget.
Though tsunamis can swarm an area in seconds, this monstrous wave seems to move in slow motion, heightening the tension exponentially as it gives the locals more time to accept the futility of running away and how they are mere moments from meeting their maker.
