10 Scariest Natural Disaster Movies You Need To See
4. Aftershock
Despite the immeasurable dangers that natural disasters can cause, they can have the ability to bring society closer together. But as Aftershock proves, battling against the forces of nature has a nasty habit of bringing out the worst aspects of mankind.
The film opens with a group of tourists getting trapped inside an underground nightclub after an earthquake levels the city. After escaping to the surface, it looks like the worst is behind them. That is, until they encounter a horde of escaped prisoners and quickly realise they were much safer when buried under a hundred tons of rubble. Taking advantage of the mounting chaos, the criminals torture and dismember everyone who crosses their path.
With Hostel's Eli Roth serving as the producer, it's no surprise to learn Aftershock's violence is relentlessly brutal. Every scene depicting the victims being mutilated or violated is shown in graphic detail, leaving nothing to the imagination. Also, the scene where Roth's character is roasted to a crisp is gasp-inducing.
Unlike most entries on this list, Aftershock functions more as an outright horror than a disaster movie, since it demonstrates how the ugliest side of humanity not only manifests but thrives in times of anarchy.
