Although there's no convenient place to experience a natural disaster, the worst spot has to be the ocean. While on the open sea, miles away from civilisation, the last thing anyone wants to encounter is a hurricane or a rogue wave.

Such is the case with Wolfgang Petersen's The Perfect Storm. This true-life drama revolves around commercial fishermen Billy Tyne (George Clooney) and Bobby Shatford (Mark Wahlberg) as they find themselves caught in a tropical storm while sailing through the North Atlantic.

What makes The Perfect Storm different from most disaster movies is how the characters can't wait out the disaster nor can they flee. All they can do is hope their vessel is strong enough to withstand the storm's wrath. But as the hurricane tears off the radio antennae and tosses crew members overboard, Billy and Bobby realise they're fighting a losing battle. Despite the fishermen's knowledge and adaptability, the storm proves too powerful to overcome, sinking the ship and killing everybody onboard.

It's a real downer ending but it establishes how there are times when humanity is unable to triumph over the forces of nature.
